Storyline
Salemtowne Retirement Community is now the presenting sponsor of StoryLine, a project of the ECHO Network. Salemtowne, a part of Winston-Salem's story since 1972, will support the work of StoryLine by making possible the recording and editing of Winston-Salem's history through the voices of its residents.
"StoryLine gives people, in our case older adults, the opportunity to share their wisdom to future generations", said Joe Lydon, president of Salemtowne. "Telling our life stories by sharing them with others and listening to those stories are tremendous gifts to both teller and listener," he added. "When we put ourselves aside, which isn't easy, we start to accept the teller and put ourselves in their shoes. A gift and transformation eventually results: the teller senses acceptance, worth and value, and the receiver changes, learns and grows."
Through the sponsorship, StoryLine will be able to edit and produce 12 months of stories for their radio partners, WFDD, WSNC, WSJS, and Que Pasa. StoryLine will also offer special recording sessions for Salemtowne and its residents. StoryLine has recorded nearly 100 stories in its mobile recording unit since its inception.
StoryLine launched in 2009 as a project of the ECHO Network. The ECHO (Everyone Can Help Out) Network was established by the Winston-Salem Foundation in 2003 as a part of its social-capital-building efforts. The ECHO Council, the membership body of the Network, works to build enriching, trusting, and long-lasting relationships among diverse people.
