A Proactive Alternative for Seniors

Salemtowne has embraced a mission to provide the highest standards and options for seniors for over half a century. Becoming a part of the Salemtowne community meant moving into a residence on campus until 2014, when Salemtowne furthered its mission by creating the first of its kind option for seniors in North Carolina called Navigation at Home.

“We live in a lovely, quiet neighborhood and want to stay there as long as we can. Navigation gives us the framework to do just that.” Members Don and Mary A.

The concept has been around for 25+ years in the Northeast, helping thousands of seniors in their own homes. Navigation at Home is a proactive solution for adults 62 or better who understand the importance of having a plan in place to meet future care needs. The program enables members to protect their assets and maintain self-driven lifestyles wherever they call home.

Navigation at Home has redefined how active, independent seniors can age successfully. The key is care coordination. The retirement industry can be hard to navigate, especially in a health crisis. The program helps members create a plan before assistance is needed and coordinates that plan once care is needed. Navigation at Home members benefit from having a person whom they have known for years there in a time of need to serve as an advocate.

“Navigation is like a big family that is there to provide support. It’s not a family in the traditional sense, but I feel like they are,” Navigation at Home members Don and Mary Armitage said. “The resources Navigation provides are not just physical resources but people resources—people who know us and understand us.”

The program combines the benefits of long-term care insurance with a personal care coordinator and empowers older adults as they prepare for their future needs. Navigation at Home provides the personal touch of a live person, called a Care Coordinator, who goes to members’ homes to get to know them. Navigation at Home also offers a pre-payment plan of long-term care costs in today’s dollars, but that is the icing on the cake. Program members decide what works for them as individuals.

“The first thing that comes to mind for me is peace of mind, knowing that there is somebody always there.” Member Hal G.

“I think it is very important to have a care coordinator because that’s a single point of contact—someone who actually spends the time getting to know my situation and who knows the things that I may need,” Navigation at Home member Hal Garrison said. “Navigation provides a personal relationship with an actual individual rather than just an institution.”

“There’s a face, there’s a voice, there’s someone that I’ve had personal contact with,” Garrison added. “I chose Navigation to provide the level of care and assistance that I would have to piece together from various sources around town.”

To better meet individual needs, Navigation at Home offers a range of customized plans to provide greater flexibility for seniors who want long- term care solutions to live at home on their own terms. Regardless of which plan type Navigation at Home members choose, all plans provide asset protection, care coordination, and high-quality care. The program also offers flexible pricing options and discounts for those who already have a long-term care insurance policy.
