The Joys and Benefits of the Salemtowne Debate Club
Participating in our Debate Club here at Salemtowne is one of the most enjoyable and enriching activities I’ve experienced. Not only is it a fun way to engage with current events and thought-provoking topics, but it also offers a host of advantages for residents to stay active both mentally and socially.
One of the fun things about being part of the debate group is the fun we have during our sessions. We choose interesting and relevant topics, such as “Does Education Increase Happiness?” and dive into researching the pros and cons. Our current topic is “Public Schools Should Not Have the Authority to Remove Books from Educational Spaces.” The research process itself is rewarding, giving us the chance to learn new things and discuss them in a lively and supportive environment. It’s not just about the arguments—it’s about sharing knowledge, learning from each other, and having fun and making friends along the way.
For seniors, staying mentally sharp is vital, and the debate club offers excellent mental stimulation. Researching and formulating arguments requires critical thinking, reasoning, and creativity—all essential components for keeping the mind active and engaged. Participating in the Debate Club has challenged me to consider different perspectives, and to articulate my thoughts better.
Whether you want to fully engage in the debates or simply observe, there’s something for everyone. Some members may not want to participate directly in the debates, but they still enjoy attending to listen, learn, and provide valuable feedback. Others might prefer to be involved in organizing, choosing topics, or helping with research. The beauty of our debate group is that there are many ways to get involved, and every contribution is appreciated.
The benefits of participating in the Debate Club go beyond the intellectual stimulation. It provides a sense of purpose and community, a chance to contribute ideas, and the opportunity to feel valued.
Joining the Debate Club has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me, and I encourage others in our community to give it a try. Whether for the intellectual challenge, the joy of research, or the opportunity to socialize with wonderful people, there is something to be gained for everyone. Come and see for yourself how much fun we have— you won’t regret it!
